The intense competition in the automobile sector is making competitors collaborate with each other to come up with competitive vehicles. Subaru and Toyota, the two Japanese rivals, are collaborating with each other to improve their existing versions of their BRZ and 86 sports cars respectively.
The Toyota GT86 and the Subaru BRZ are the popular sports cars that can help the Japanese car makers gain an edge in a market that is being increasingly dominated by crossovers. It is said that the 86 and BRZ are identical in all aspects except the brand name. Specifically, the two automobile giants are working together to equip the upgraded versions of their sports cars with larger and more powerful engines.
How did the collaboration happen?
This is not the first time that the two rivals will be teaming up and their collaboration has been often nicknamed as ‘Toyobaru’ in the car world. In fact, it was Toyota’s leadership that sought Subaru’s help to develop an engine that will help it to make a comeback in the sports car market.
Toyota has always won accolades for launching sports cars like Supra. However, the Japanese company soon realized it was impossible for them to launch the GT86, a high-performance sports car, without relying on the Subaru boxer engine. Thus, the joint collaboration was born and customers witnessed the birth of an affordable rear-wheel-drive coupe that delivered an incredible driving experience.
Upgraded Engine
Subaru and Toyota will enhance the new 2.4-litre engine and fit it in the updated versions of BRZ and 86 sports models that are due to be released in 2021. The powertrain will be based on Subaru Ascent’s engine and the platform will be based on a Toyota design. The chassis will be having a lower center-of-gravity and it will be delivering greater stability than the chassis of existing models.
