Lexus will soon be seen challenging Tesla Motors to occupy a dominant position in the electric car market because it has planned to launch an all-electric 2020 Lexus CT to combat the Tesla Model 3. The 2020 Lexus CT can be considered to be a radical successor of the existing hybrid model. Taking into the account the future demand for electric vehicles, Lexus has decided to replace the hybrid powertrain with an all-electric powertrain.
The plan to launch an electric Lexus CT comes at a time when the company is busy promoting the hybrid Lexus UX crossover in the market. By revealing the plan to launch an electric CT, Lexus has made it clear that the CT and UX are two different vehicles that are marketed to different customer segments.
Sharing the TNGA Platform
The electric Lexus CT will be tentatively launched in 2020 and it will be the first electric vehicle that will be based on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform. Besides Tesla, the upcoming Lexus CT will also be competing with Mercedes A-Class and GLA models. Additionally, there is a possibility that the Lexus CT will be available in the hatchback as well as a crossover model.
It has been reported that that the 2020 Lexus CT model will have several engine options and the all-electric powertrain will be one of the options. Another trim level will get the more powerful 2.0-litre hybrid engine that is found in Toyota Auris.
The Road Ahead
It is clear that the Lexus CT is made to reborn once again as an electric car to avoid being marginalized by the new Lexus UX. Until now, Tesla had remained unfazed by the growing competition in the electric car market.
