In a previous blog, we saw how Hyundai aimed to challenge the competition in the small SUV segment by launching the bold and the flamboyant Hyundai Kona SUV. The Hyundai Kona is specifically designed for the younger generation who prefers style over space.
However, our blog had also mentioned that the small SUV needed much more than style to gain widespread popularity. It appears that Hyundai has its strategy on the right track because the Korean carmaker has unveiled a battery-electric Hyundai Kona at the New York Auto Show. The 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric is specifically targeted towards the U.S. market and the fully electric SUV will have 250 miles of range.
The entry-level electric Kona gets 201 hp from the electric drivetrain that comprises of an electric motor that charges a 64 kWh lithium-ion battery. The electric SUV’s spacious cabin is its key selling feature as it is equipped with several safety-technology features that are impressive.
Safety Technologies
The 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric is equipped with a suite of driver assistance technologies that provide forward collision avoidance with pedestrian detection, rear cross traffic collision assistance, lane keep assist, blind spot collision warning, high beam assist, and driver attention warning system.
Other features include Qi wireless charging, Android Auto integration and Apple CarPlay, rain sensing wipers, a head-up display and Hyundai’s Blue Link connected vehicle system.
Exteriors
The Hyundai Kona electric is not as stylish as the standard version. The absence of grille in the electric Kona makes it look a little odd; hence the SUV may not be as appealing as the non-electric version.
Competition
The 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric proves to be a spacious alternative to rivals like Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt. The Kona Electric is poised to generate sales in regions that promote the use of Zero Emission Vehicles.
As of now, the pricing details of the Kona Electric are not available and it is estimated that the model will have a starting price in the range of $30,000 - $40,000.
