The Supra was one of the most popular sports cars that had almost achieved a cult status among the fans. The Toyota supercar was also featured in several video games as well as in the ‘Fast and Furious’ movie franchise. Unfortunately for the fans, the Supra was discontinued by Toyota for complying with stringent emission standards.
The Relaunch
It appeared that the Supra was almost reborn when Toyota and BMW collaborated in 2013 to build ‘two-door, rear-drive’ sports car. Hopes soared high when the collaboration gave rise to the FT-1 Concept car that was showcased at the Detroit Motor Show in 2014. However, neither Toyota nor BMW ever revealed the details about the production version or the new Supra.
Fans had almost given hopes to see the new Supra when Toyota announced that the 2019 Supra will be positively launched as a ‘Gazoo’ racing car. Gazoo is the racing division of Toyota that will be leading the production of the car; hence the car will not bear the ‘Supra’ badge. The Supra prototype has also been tested on the Nürburgring racing circuit.
Engine Details
The new Supra will be tentatively launched at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show and it will resemble the FT-1 concept car. The entry-level 2L model will get 192 hp from a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbo engine and the flagship 3L model will get 360 hp from a 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder turbo engine. The engine for the 3L model has been co-developed by BMW and Toyota.
Another trim level of the new Supra gets a 2.0-liter turbo engine that delivers 245 hp. All the engine variants will be coupled to an 8-speed automatic transmission system. It is clear that the new Supra is not meant for professional racing drivers. Instead, the car promises to deliver a fun and exciting ride to any enthusiast who wishes to enjoy the feel of a sports car.
Release date
The Supra will be manufactured by Magna Steyr in Austria and the model will be made available in showrooms by the spring of 2019. An artists impression of the Supra reveals that Toyota engineers have done a great job in balancing the design, performance as well as the pricing.
Currently, the pricing details of the Supra for the Dubai car market are not known and enthusiasts will have to wait till they catch a glimpse of an actual Supra being driven on the Dubai roads.
