Hyundai reveals the details about the 2019 Nexo Fuel Cell crossover

Slowly but steadily, carmakers are preparing themselves to embrace the electric future. However, the mass adoption of electric vehicles is unlikely to happen before 2030. Still, there exists a high demand for green cars that rely on energy sources other than gasoline and diesel.

Hyundai is one of the foremost players who is eyeing to introduce a fleet of green cars that are powered by hydrogen fuel-cell. The Korean carmaker has already introduced the hydrogen technology in the car market by launching models like the Tucson Fuel Cell.

It appears that Hyundai is quite aggressive in launching fuel-cell vehicles because the company has recently revealed the details of an upcoming fuel-cell crossover that is regarded as the successor of the Tucson Fuel Cell. The announcement was made at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show and it revealed that the name of its new fuel-cell crossover will be ‘2019 Nexo Fuel Cell’. The details that were announced at a press conference reveal that the new fuel-cell crossover will be bigger and better than the Tucson Fuel Cell.

Improved Performance

Nexo has an electric-drive motor that is more powerful than the one found in the Tucson Fuel Cell. The motor delivers 120 Kw of power and 291 pound-feet of torque.  The high power enables the vehicle to zoom from 0-60 mph in just 9.9 seconds. The storage system of the Nexo weighs lighter than the one found in the Tucson and it can store 14 pounds of hydrogen. The vehicle has the capacity to cover 135 miles with a completely filled tank.

The vehicle is equipped with three hydrogen tanks that are stored beneath the rear end of the vehicle and Hyundai has succeeded in eliminating noise from the passenger compartment by accommodating all the moving parts under the hood.  The fuel-cell tanks are durable enough to sustain until the vehicle covers a distance of 150,000 miles.

Extremely Durable

The vehicle has been tested for high durability and under harsh conditions. For example, the Nexo was driven on the tough terrains of Mount Evans and on the steep roads of the Death valley. The vehicle performed well when it was driven under extreme temperatures of -22 degrees Fahrenheit and 127 degrees Fahrenheit.

The extreme durability of the Nexo shows that it is suitable to be driven in Dubai and other regions of the Middle East. Electric vehicles are gaining acceptance in Dubai and a number of car companies are testing the durability of their electric vehicles in desert conditions.  It shouldn’t come as a surprise to see the Hyundai Nexo dominating Dubai’s electric car market in the future.
