Technological advancement is one of the distinctive features of Lamborghini cars and the car maker has proved its abilities once again when it debuted its Terzo Millennio concept, the futuristic electric car that has been built though a collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Terzo Milleno - The future hypercar
Lamborghini’s futuristic concept car was unveiled at the MIT campus as well as at Bolognese and it clearly represents Lamborghini’s vision for future hypercars. Some of the groundbreaking features of the car can be attributed to MIT research teams that were led by Professor Mircea Dinca and Professor Anastasios John Hart respectively. The teams specifically helped Lamborghini to develop novel energy storage systems and innovative materials that have self-diagnostic capabilities.
Getting rid of bulky battery
Lamborghini has always believed that a single and bulky battery will prove to be an inconvenient electric source. Instead, the car maker believes that low-voltage supercapacitors will be more efficient in powering the electric car. Professor Dinca’s research team is exploring multiple ways by which supercapacitors will be incorporated throughout the body of the vehicle. The team has managed to achieve its objective by powering the Terzo Millennio entirely with supercapacitors.
Self-healing car body
Professor Hart’s team is focusing on increasing the use of self-diagnostic carbon fiber within the body of the electric car. The main idea is to introduce a system that detects the damage and which activates heat-generating microchannels in the carbon fiber body. The heat generated in the process seals cracks and prevents the car body from being damaged further. Moreover, the Terzo Millennio ’s carbon fiber body will be embedded with electricity storing carbon tubes that will provide energy.
Implications on the Dubai market
Lucrative markets like Dubai are already welcoming electric cars with open arms. Electric car companies like Tesla have already begun to establish themselves and luxury car makers like Lamborghini won’t find it challenging to launch futuristic vehicles in this market. However, the Terzo Millennio is yet to go for production and a number of design changes are expected along the way. Moreover, officials from Lamborghini believe that the complete domination of electric vehicles will not happen any time sooner than 2025.
