The Honda Accord Hybrid: Will it survive the crossover onslaught?

Honda Accord has long dominated sedan market and now the sedan’s hybrid model is winning admiration for offering several benefits. The Honda Accord Hybrid not only delivers a fun driving experience but also a greater level of driving comfort and a higher fuel efficiency for an affordable price. It is time to take a serious look at this hybrid sedan that delivers a true value for money.

The Engine

The Honda Accord Hybrid gets a third-generation Honda hybrid powertrain that delivers a power of 212 hp. The powertrain comprises a 2.0-litre Atkinson cycle 4-cylinder engine that is paired with an electric motor. The gas engine gives out 143 hp while the motor delivers 181 hp.  The car operates by either simultaneously relying on both the engine as well as the motor or by relying on only the engine or only the electric motor. Customers can drive the car by selecting any of the three modes, namely Normal, Econ and Sport respectively. The fast acceleration and the excellent handling makes the Honda Accord Hybrid an affordable substitute for high-end hybrid cars like Porsche Panamera e-Hybrid and BMW i8.

Technology Features

The Honda Accord Hybrid is available in 2 trim levels, namely the Hybrid, and the Hybrid Touring. The base version is equipped with features like 17-inch allow wheels, dual-zone climate control, LED headlights, LED taillights, multi-angle backup camera, 7-inch TFT screen and smart entry along with push-button start. The car also comes with Honda Sensing suite of advanced safety technologies that are newest in the market. The upper Hybrid Touring trim-level is fitted with Honda’s Display Audio system that features a navigation system and a voice recognition system. Despite the availability of advanced features, the Hybrid cars lack the necessary level of comfortable cabin features that are typically found in high-end sedans.

Competition

The Honda Accord Hybrid’s engine performance gives it a clear edge over its key hybrid competitors like Hyundai Sonata, Toyota Camry, Ford Fusion, Kia Optima and Chevy Malibu. Additionally, the hybrid car provides one of the best fuel-efficiency ratings and driving comfort in its respective segment. It remains to be seen whether the sedan manages to woo customers away from stylish and practical crossovers that are threatening the midsize sedan segment.
